2. HAVE GREAT GOALS TO WORK TOWARDS
“Far better to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory, nor defeat” ~ Theodore Roosevelt, 1899.
In their bestselling book, “Built To Last”, Jim Collins and Jerry Porras while describing one of the key factors that made visionary companies succeed over time, they used the word “BHAG”, short for “Big Hairy Audacious Goals”. Each and every one of the visionary company had one or two BHAGs that seemed impossible to anyone outside the company but was a dream to get by every individual in the company. It’s a powerful mechanism to stimulate progress.
Someone once said, if your dreams do not scare you then you need to abandon it and dream again, this time, let your thoughts run wild, and when you get one, write it down.
Having great goals gets you excited and scared at the same time, creating a unique feeling that makes you truly alive. Goals that are easy to achieve won’t spark anything in you: there will be no desire to innovative, improve, strategize, connect and plan, all of which would make your pursuit way more fun.
The best way to do this is to project yourself into the future 3 or 5 years, write out what you are doing in the present, include different areas of your life – for example your relationships, money, health and business then write out what you want to see in all these areas of your life 5 years from now, and do not be scared to make it big cos’ pursuing BHAGs would give you more fun.
What is life without a little risk? ~ Sirius Black.
