The Things That Happen To You!

Things That Happen To You
Things That Happen To You

Life as we have come to realize is filled with a lot of unexpected happenings, sometimes good, sometimes bad and sometimes terrible things happen even to good people and when these things happen we are almost tempted to ask God why?

I once had the priviledge to hear a teenager tell me his life story and I was shocked at how humans can be so wicked to each other. This young man who is the eldest of 3 lost his mother quite early in life and was left with the father who could barely provide their needs but had his own house in the village where he lived with the three children.

Not so many months after this boy got out of secondary school, they lost the dad to sickness and this boy was saddled with the responsibility of fending for himself and the two siblings. While he was still trying to get his head around this unhappy life, the eldest member of the father’s family sold the father’s house and threw them out into the street to go look for somewhere to stay because he believes he now owns the property.

I listened with great pain as this young man narrated how life has turned his dreams upside down. Where would he go? How can he make something good out of life? How can he still ever amount to something great in life? These were the questions that ran through my mind while he shared his tale.

Maya Angelou said “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them”.

Our stories are quite different and so are our challenges but our stories would be told only by the way we decide to respond to the happenings of life. Do we decide to sit still and wet our pillows with tears? Or do we get up and work hard to have a better story or do we leave it all to faith and just hope that maybe, just maybe things would change for the good? These are the choices we are faced with.

I have learnt to become a sticker for the adage that says “Good things come to those who wait, but better things come to those who go out and get them”.

Whatever you decide to do, do not allow the things that happen to you reduce the man you were born to be…chase your dreams while you still can.

I honour you.

The Important Things in Life!

28/09/2014 ~ SuccessJourney Daily Post with Nicholas Akomire ©2014

Good morning. How was your night? I found this wonderful piece and it’s worth sharing with you, here it goes:

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty transparent jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children, your friends  – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. Support your friends. Take out time to keep fit. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, or give a dinner party”.

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

Happy Sunday.

During the course of this week, we had the priviledge of learning the five habits that gets “smart people” winning. These are habits that everyone and anyone can cultivate if they are determined. Just so you do not forget in a hurry, here are the 5 Winning Habits of Smart People:

  1. Persistence – It is the act of never-ceasing, never letting go, not accepting defeat or failure, believing beyond reasonable doubts that something is possible.
  2. Goal Setters – By setting goals, you become your own boos, giving yourself time by which you must have completed certain tasks that are crucial to your success in whatever you pursue.
  3. Avid Readers – Benefits of reading include: increase in verbal skills, helps in articulating thoughts,  enhances problem solving skills, increases concentration, improves writing skills and improves memory.
  4. Self Disciplined – Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you or makes you happy ~ Robert Tew
  5. Great Thinkers – Your ability to think through challenges and proffer a working solution sets you apart from every other person who just sees the challenge but has no solution.

The 5 Winning Habits of Smart People – 5. Great Thinkers

26/09/2014 ~ SuccessJourney Daily Post with Nicholas Akomire ©2014

Great Thinkers
Great Thinkers

With our present day society, you will agree with me that there are so many challenges created every single day in the family, organizations, communities, government, religious groups etc. and these often times requires someone with a great idea to fix. This is where smart people dominate.

Your ability to think through challenges and proffer a working solution sets you apart from every other person who just sees the challenge but has no solution. Albert Einstein once said “Small is the number of people who see with their eyes and think with their minds”. It is very easy for everyone to see the problem but only a few have the solution.

Becoming a great thinker does not require having a super powers, it relies on “Metacognition” – the self awareness of one’s knowledge. If you can recall, we had said in previous post that being an avid reader helps in articulating thoughts,  enhances problem solving skills and improves your memory – this is what metacognition is all about.

Metacognition encourages critical thinking and helps in maximizing cognitive skills. Cognitive skills include: comparing, analyzing, interfering. If you are able to do these very well, you will very well be able to provide solutions to  a thousand and one challenges. This sets you apart from others and increases your value.

“The founding fathers were not only brilliant, they were system builders and systematic thinkers. They came up with comprehensive plans and visions” ~ Ron Chernow.

Work towards being a systematic thinker and you will be glad you did.

The world is waiting for you.

Have a great day.

I honour you!

The 5 Winning Habits of Smart People – 4. Self Disciplined

25/09/2014 ~ SuccessJourney Daily Post with Nicholas Akomire ©2014

Winning most times than not, does not happen by accident – it happens as a result of predefined decisions and steps taken in that direction, deciding to be self-disciplined is one of such decision.

The WordWeb dictionary defines self-discipline as “the act of denying yourself; controlling your impulses”. There should come a time in your life when you decide what you actually want to get yourself involved in and what you shouldn’t. This decision informs what you do and what you don’t, where you go and where you don’t, the type of conversations you get involved in and the ones you should stay away from, who you hang out with and who you shouldn’t etc. This keeps a check on you and help you focus your time and resources on the important things that would grow you and as well keep you away from so many unnecessary stress and trouble.

If you lead a life where everything and anything goes, you will be shocked to find out the number of people that would take you for granted. Setting boundaries and rules around you does not only help to protect your image and integrity, it gives you a form of value and that is very important.

Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you or makes you happy ~ Robert Tew

Enjoy your day!

I honour you!

The 5 Winning Habits of Smart People – 3. Avid Readers

24/09/2014 ~ SuccessJourney Daily Post with Nicholas Akomire ©2014

Avid Reader
Avid Reader

An habit is something that you have done over time and has become natural to you that you find yourself doing it unconsciously. Once you get to that level, then you can be said to have developed an habit, either good or bad. In order for you to actually do things that will put you in the league of “smart people” in the society, you must have enough information at your disposal. One of the best definitions of wisdom is “the right application of knowledge”, you cannot apply rightly what you do not know. This brings us to the third habit that you need to develop if you want to walk the path of the smart: you need to become an Avid Reader, someone who is zealous and always interested in reading, not just textbooks and materials but also different articles, news, blogs and publications.

How can you stand out when you are not up to date? If your dream is to become great tomorrow in a particular field or line of business, you must develop the habit of reading up new trends, happenings and inventions going on in that field. It should not be a ‘once-in-a-while’ thing, make it something you do every day. Things change and that is why you find so many books have editions with the newer editions having better and richer information that the former.

Studies have shown that 15 minutes of reading a day equals more than 1,000,000 words a year. Some of the benefits of reading include:  increase in verbal skills,  helps in articulating thoughts,  enhances problem solving skills, increases concentration, improves writing skills and improves memory. With all of these improvements happening daily in your life, you would have no option than being smart.

Jim Rohn said “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenges, wish for more wisdom. The major value in life is not what you get. The major value in life is what you become. Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become”.

Develop the habit of reading and you will be sure to become that man who attracts success.

Have a lovely Wednesday.

I honour you!
